Wolfpack Sweeps Camels, Buccaneers

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team (10-6) shut out Campbell (4-12) and Charleston Southern (5-14) on the second day of the NC State Invitational in conjunction with the Duke Invitational at Dail Stadium. The Wolfpack run-ruled the Camels, 8-0 (5), and shut out the Buccaneers, 6-0.
Ten of the team's 14 runs on the day were scored thanks to a combined five home runs. The Wolfpack has limited its opponents to two or less runs in its last seven games.
The sweep extends the Pack's win streak to seven.
Of Note (Game One)
-The 8-0 win over the Camels was the team's first shutout of the season and fourth run-rule victory in its last five games.
-Four different players homered in the contest, which scored seven of the team's eight runs. Logan Morris and Jessica Moore belted their fourth of the season, while Randi Farricker and Angie Rizzi hit their second. It was the second time this season that NC State has hit four home runs in a game.
-Morris and Rizzi each tallied a base hit along with their home runs to both go 2-for-3 at the plate.
-Devin Wallace (4-3) threw her fourth complete game of the year, allowing just one hit in the shutout while matching her season-high of seven strikeouts.
How It Happened (Game One)
-After a 1-2-3 inning for Campbell in the first, NC State scored three runs on two hits and an error in the bottom frame. Sam Russ led off with a walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Brigette Nordberg singled to right field to advance Russ to third, and an error allowed Russ to score. With Nordberg on second after the Campbell error, Morris went deep to center field for a two-run homer.
-Moore doubled the team's lead in the third with a three-run home run to left field. Nordberg reached on an error and Morris singled to left field to start the side.
-Randi Farricker and Angie Rizzi both went yard to tack on one run apiece in the fifth and end the game in run-rule fashion.
Of Note (Game Two)
-Nordberg belted her team-leading ninth home run of the season.
-Sydney Nester (5-2) threw her third complete game of the season, allowing just three hits in the team's second shutout of the season while striking out a career-high nine batters.
-Rizzi stole a career-high three bases in the contest and is the first player to do so in a single game since Tyler Ross on March 11, 2017, vs. Syracuse.
-After today's wins, Morris extended her reached base safely streak to 10, while Nordberg extended her's to nine and Sam Russ owns an eight-game streak.
How It Happened (Game Two)
-After two-and-a-half scoreless innings, Nordberg put the Pack on top with a three-run bomb to right center. Angie drew a two-out walk, stole second, and an error on the attempt to catch her stealing allowed her to threaten at third. Russ followed up with a walk to put runners at the corners for Nordberg.
-The Pack tacked its other three runs in the fourth inning on two hits. Rizzi, Nordberg and Johnston all managed to reach base on a walk, and with one out in the frame Morris hit a 2-RBI single to center field to plate the first two. Moore followed with another outfield single to re-load the bases, and Natalie Jones walked in the third run.
On Deck
NC State will conclude competition Sunday in the NC State Invitational in conjunction with the Duke Invitational when it faces Campbell one more time at 11:30 a.m. The game will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
