Pack Softball Powers Past Virginia, 10-3

RALEIGH - Highlighted by freshman Haley Finn's grand slam in the fifth inning and senior Molly Hutchison's three-run home run in the sixth, the NC State softball team defeated Virginia, 10-3, on Friday evening in the first of a three-game series at Dail Stadium.
The Wolfpack improves to 9-16 on the season and 3-1 in ACC play, and the Cavaliers fall to 10-14 and 2-5 in conference action.
Game Rewind
-NC State scored first with three runs in the second inning. Macauley Prickett and Tyler Ross hit back-to-back RBI singles on loaded bases and Molly Hutchison drew a walk on loaded bases.
-Virginia got on the board in the fifth inning as Kaitlin Fitzgerald doubled to left center and scored on a double by Erika Osherow.
-The Pack answered in the bottom of the frame as Finn hit a grand slam to center field, marking the first home run of her career and first grand slam for the team this season.
-The Cavaliers plated two more runs in the six inning. Allison Davis hit a leadoff triple up the right field line and scored on a single by Olivia Gott. An RBI single by Fitzgerald allowed Gott to score after she reached second on an error and third on a fly out to right field.
-NC State extended its lead to 10-3 in the bottom frame as Hutchison hit a three-run bomb to left center. Ross led off the inning with a single to the pitcher and stole second base, and Jade Caraway followed with a six-pitch walk.
-Virginia was retired in order in the top of the seventh to end the game.
-Peyton Silverman picked up her sixth win of the season in the circle after pitching her 10th complete game and not walking any batters.
-Caraway and Prickett led the team at the plate as both tallied two hits in their three appearances, and Ross additionally had two hits in her four trips to the plate.

NC State will face Virginia Saturday at Dail Stadium for game two of the weekend series. First pitch is set for 5 p.m.
