Softball Clinches Series In 8-6 Win Over Virginia

RALEIGH - The NC State softball team clinched its second conference series of the season on Saturday evening, defeating Virginia 8-6 in its second of a three-game series at Dail Stadium.
With the win, the Wolfpack improves to 10-16 (4-1 ACC), while the Cavaliers fall to 10-15 (2-6 ACC).
Game Rewind
-NC State got off to a hot start, scoring three runs in the first inning. Tyler Ross led off with a solo home run to left field, and Haley Finn hit a 2-RBI single to score Molly Hutchison and Haylee Kobziak.
-The Pack plated three more in the second as Ross crossed home plate from second on a double by Jade Caraway to left field. Hutchison then hit a two-run bomb to center field to give NC State a 6-0 lead.
-Virginia got on the board in the top of the fourth, as Madison Labshere was brought home by Allison Davis's single to center field after hitting a one-out double to center.
-NC State answered in the bottom of the frame with two more runs. Caraway scored the first run on an error from second base. She drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second after Kobziak was hit by a pitch. Finn followed with a single to right center to allow Kobziak to score from third.
-The Cavaliers cut the deficit to 8-3 in the top of the fifth with Olivia Gott's two-run home run to left center.
-In the seventh inning Virginia tried to rally with three more runs. Davis hit a 2-RBI single up the middle with the bases loaded, and Iyana Hughes followed with a double to left field to bring Erika Osherow home from second base.
-Sophomore Brittany Nimmo picked up her fourth win of the season in the circle in the five innings she pitched.
-Finn led the Pack's batting order with two hits in her three plate appearances, and Hutchison was 2-for-4 on the day.
-Ross and Hutchison both belted their fourth home run of the season in the matchup.

NC State will face Virginia in the final game of the series Sunday. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Dail Stadium.
