
Wolfpack Splits Pair Of Games On Opening Day

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The NC State softball team opened its season on Friday at the FGCU Kickoff Classic, and split its pair of games at the FGCU Softball Complex in Fort Myers, Fla. The Wolfpack defeated Georgetown 12-2 in its season opener and fell to Florida Gulf Coast 7-2 in the nightcap.
Five freshmen and two transfer sophomores made their collegiate debuts while a combined 15 players saw time on the field.
The Pack moves to 1-1 on the season while the Hoyas fall to 0-2 and Eagles improve to 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
-Georgetown got on the board in the first inning as Theresa Kane scored on a groundout to second base after she led off with an outfield single.
-The Pack answered in the bottom frame with three runs when Timberlyn Shurbutt hit a bases-clearing double in her first career at bat after Jade Caraway, Angie Rizzi and Cheyenne Balzer all drew walks.
-NC State added a run in the second inning when Caraway managed to score on a Georgetown error after drawing her second walk of the game.
-The Hoyas cut their deficit to two in the third inning when Kane scored on Noelle Holiday's sacrifice fly to left field after leading off with a single up the middle.
-In the bottom frame the Pack scored eight runs on five hits and a pair of errors, highlighted by Chandley Garner's grand slam in the second at bat of her career. Sam Russ additionally brought Balzer home after getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, while Macauley Prickett and Rizzi scored from second on Georgetown errors.
-Kama Woodall earned her first career win in the circle, throwing a complete game and giving up six hits.
-Balzer and Garner led the team at the plate with two hits apiece while the team had a combined seven hits.
Game Two
-After two scoreless innings FGCU took a 3-0 lead in the third inning thanks to Brittany McGuire's 2-RBI single to left field and Ashley Swiderski's RBI single up the middle.
-Compton put the Pack on the board in the fourth on Haley Finn's groundout to second after reaching on an error.
-The Eagles added a run in the fifth with Swiderski's RBI triple to right center after McGuire hit a one-out single up the middle.
-The following inning NC State scored its second run of the game as Compton scored on a fielder's choice after she led the inning off with a double.
-In the bottom of the sixth the Eagles scored three runs on five hits, highlighted by a pair of RBI singles and a solo shot to left field.
-The Pack threatened in the seventh with runners on second and third after a pair of hits by Shurbutt and Garner, but were unable to rally.
-Rizzi and Garner led the team at the plate with two hits apiece while the team had a combined eight hits.

NC State will continue its weekend slate the FGCU Kickoff Classic Saturday with a doubleheader against LIU Brooklyn and Ball State. First pitch against the Blackbirds is 12:15 p.m. and its matchup with the Cardinals is slated for 2:30 p.m.
