
Pack Splits Doubleheader On Second Day Of FGCU Kickoff Classic

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The NC State softball team continued competition on Saturday at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Fla., splitting its doubleheader against LIU Brooklyn and Ball State. The Wolfpack defeated the Blackbirds 10-1 (5) and fell 8-2 to the Cardinals at the FGCU Softball Complex.
NC State moves to 2-2 on the season while LIU Brooklyn falls to 0-3 and Ball State improves to 2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game One
-After both teams were scoreless in the first two innings, the Pack scored four runs on five hits and an error in the third. After Haley Finn, Sam Russ and Angie Rizzi each hit infield singles Cheyenne Balzer cleared the bases with a double to center field. Timberlyn Shurbutt then brought Balzer home with a double to right center.
-In the fourth inning an RBI single by Lily Bishop brought Russ home after reaching on a bunt single.
-The Blackbirds got on the board in the bottom frame when Victoria Zamora scored on a passed ball.
-In the fifth the Pack scored five runs on four hits and two errors. Shurbutt led off the inning with a double to left center, and Alyssa Compton and Chandley Garner were walked to load the bases. LIU Brooklyn tried to stop a run with a 4-2 fielder's choice, but an error pushed Compton and Shurbutt across the plate. Jade Caraway's RBI single to left field allowed Garner to score the third run, while pinch hitter Natalie Jones's hit on the next at bat brought Russ home and another error allowed Caraway to score.
-Devin Wallace earned the first win of her Wolfpack career. She pitched four innings, giving up four hits and striking out as many batters.
-The Pack tallied a combined 13 hits, as Rizzi, Shurbutt, Finn and Russ each had two apiece.
Game Two
-Ball State quickly took a 3-0 lead in the first inning. An RBI single up the middle by Janae Hogg brought Haley Dominique home for the first run after leading off with a single through the left gap and advancing on a sacrifice bunt. After a double to right center put runners on the corners, Compton tried to stop a run by gloving a ground ball to home plate but was unable to make the throw in time. Hailey Demnianuik followed with an RBI single down the left field line to push the third run across the plate.
-The Pack added runs in the third and fifth innings, cutting its deficit to one. In the third Rizzi scored from third on Balzer's single to center field after reaching on a fielder's choice and advancing to second on a BSU error. Russ scored the run in the fifth on Caraway's single to center field after hitting a one-out single to second base and advancing on an error.
-The Cardinals added their other five runs in the sixth inning. Hogg hit a three-run home run to center field while a pair of runners scored on a Wolfpack error after a 4-2 fielder's choice.
-Russ led the team at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance while Compton had two hits in her three at bats. The Pack collectively had eight hits.

NC State will face Memphis Sunday in its final game of the weekend. First pitch is slated for 9 a.m. at the FGCU Softball Complex.
