Softball To Open Season At FGCU Kickoff Classic

RALEIGH – The NC State softball team is set to open its season this weekend at the FGCU Kickoff Classic in Fort Myers, Fla. This marks the third consecutive year the program has opened its season in Florida, as Wolfpack is slated to play five games Friday through Sunday at the FGCU Softball Complex.

2017 Season Recap
Last season the Wolfpack earned 18 wins, highlighted by 10 victories over conference opponents and a run to the ACC Championship semifinals. The Pack faced the toughest nonconference schedule in the NCAA and had the No. 24 overall schedule in 2017.
The team had three garner postseason honors, including Second Team All-ACC selection Jade Caraway who broke single season records in batting average (.389) and triples (5) and tied the single season record in hits (72).
2018 Roster
This year's talented roster comprises of six freshmen and two transfers along with 10 experienced returners. The six freshmen were tabbed as the No. 19 recruiting class in 2017 and four were listed among the top 112 recruits in the FloSoftball rankings.
Transfers Angie Rizzi and Devin Wallace are both poised to make an immediate impact with their previous collegiate experience while five of the 10 returners started all 56 games last season.

Homecoming
For Caraway and Kama Woodall, this weekend will be a homecoming as both hail from the Sunshine State. Caraway's hometown of Winter Garden is just more than three hours from Fort Myers, while Woodall's hometown of Spring Hill is 2.45 hours.
Familiar Face
Georgetown head coach Pat Conlan served as an assistant coach at NC State from 2004-05. In her two seasons with the Pack, she helped guide the team to a 73-52 record and the pitching staff to a combined 1.71 ERA.
Scouting The Competition
-NC State has faced each team on its slate this weekend at least once before. The Pack is undefeated against FGCU, LIU Brooklyn, Ball State and Memphis in its all-time series with each program, and is tied at two with Georgetown.
-Florida Gulf Coast and Memphis both finished in the top 100 of last year's final RPI.
-Last season Ball State, FGCU and Memphis all qualified for their respective conference tournaments, and the Eagles advanced to the ASUN championship game.
-Each team returns their top pitcher from last season, while Georgetown, FGCU and LIU Brooklyn all return their leaders in batting average and home runs.
