FORT MYERS, Fla. – The NC State softball team closed out its opening weekend at the FGCU Kickoff Classic on Sunday with a 2-1 win over Memphis, handing the Tigers its first loss of the season at the FGCU Softball Complex.

RYCHCIK'S REVIEW
On going 3-2 this weekend
"Looking at today's game, I think we made a good step," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "It's something we talked about this weekend that we have to continue to get better. We started five freshmen, three sophomores, a junior and a senior today. We're going to have some moments but I'm glad and we progressed. We played a couple of teams we should have handled and we did, and we played a couple of tougher teams but we didn't finish the way we should have. We were able to handle the adversity today in the seventh inning when we got a couple of bad breaks which is a good sign for us and a confidence builder."
On energy in the dugout
"There was a good vibe in the dugout all weekend, especially in game five of the weekend at 9 a.m. We were up early and it's hard when you don't normally practice and operate that early normally. We had a lot of energy and were in a much better spot coming into that game. Our upper classmen helped us to come out with a lot of energy and our team as a whole did a great job. There's a lot of work to be done but there's a point you do as much as you can and then need to be challenged by game pressures and scenarios. It's different in games and now we can address a few things we need to get better at, so we'll get back to work and prepare for next weekend."
HOW IT HAPPENED
-NC State took a 2-0 lead in the third inning thanks to a bunt single by Angie Rizzi, followed by a Memphis error, scoring Sam Russ and Jade Caraway. Russ hit a one-out single and advanced to second after Memphis attempted to tag her on a fielder's choice with Caraway at bat.
-Memphis threatened in the seventh with Kendall Lee's RBI single to left field, scoring the runner from second after the first two batters were hit-by-pitch. With the bases loaded and two outs on the board Timberlyn Shurbutt made a running catch in third base foul territory to seal the Pack's win.
-Devin Wallace picked up the win in the circle, improving to 2-1 on the season with a career-best seven strikeouts, while Kama Woodall earned the first save of her career after entering the game in the seventh inning with runners on first and second and no outs.
-Balzer, Caraway, Rizzi and Russ had one hit apiece, as Rizzi tallied a team-best seven on the weekend.
UP NEXT
The Pack will open its home slate Feb. 16-18 when it hosts Louisville, Ohio State and Northwestern in the ACC/B1G Challenge at Dail Stadium. NC State and Louisville will play the Buckeyes and Wildcats twice apiece, but not each other in the tournament.
