CARY, NC. - No. 14 NC State women's tennis dropped a tight 4-3 decision to No. 22 Duke in a nonconference match Wednesday evening at Cary Tennis Park. With the loss, the Wolfpack's 14-match doubles point streak came to an end, snapping the longest such run in program history in the current college tennis format.
Duke claimed the doubles point to take an early 1-0 lead, ending NC State's run of 14 consecutive doubles points.
In singles play, the Wolfpack quickly evened the match at 1-1 when No. 51 Anna Zyryanova earned a dominant 6-2, 6-0 win over No. 108 Liv Hovde on court three. Victoria Osuigwe then gave NC State a 2-1 advantage with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Shavit Kimchi on court five.
The Blue Devils responded by winning the next two completed singles matches on courts one and six to move in front 3-2, but No. 65 Lavinia Tanasie kept the Pack alive with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Claire An on court four to level the match at 3-3.
The dual ultimately came down to court two, where No. 42 Gabriella Broadfoot faced No. 70 Aspen Schuman. Broadfoot claimed the opening set in a tiebreak, but Schuman answered with a 6-3 second-set win before clinching the match for Duke with a 6-2 decision in the third.
