RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team dropped the series opener, 5–1, after Pittsburgh (14-10, 1-3) used a five-run fifth inning to pull away Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.

The Pack moves to 18-9 overall and 0-1 in ACC play.

How it Happened

Both teams were quiet early, as neither side recorded a run through the first two innings.
NC State threatened in the second after Lily Livingston doubled and Morgen Talley singled, but Pittsburgh escaped the inning without allowing a run.
The Pack broke through in the third inning when Carly Short launched a solo home run to left center field to give NC State a 1–0 lead.
Pitt answered in the fifth inning, starting with an RBI double from Tieley Vaughn that tied the game.
- Later in the frame, Calle Henne delivered a two-run single to give the Panthers a 3–1 advantage.
- A defensive miscue allowed another run to score in the inning, extending the Pittsburgh lead to 4–1.
The Panthers added an insurance run in the seventh when Henne drove in Vaughn with an RBI single.
NC State was unable to rally in the final inning, as Pittsburgh retired the side to seal the 5–1 win.

By the Numbers

Rylee Wyman struck out six during her 4.2 innings in the circle.
Wynne Gore picked up three K's of her own in relief.
Carly Short extended her reached base streak to 27 games.
