NEW ORLEANS, LA - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its weekly National Athletes of the Week on Monday evening, with NC State fifth-year senior Hannah Gapes earning her second national honor of the season.
Gapes' latest recognition follows her USTFCCCA weekly honor of the season, which she received on Oct. 5 following her performance at the Joe Piane Invitational. She earned this national distinction after capturing the individual title in the women's 6K at the Under Armour Pre-National Invitational, crossing the finish line in 18:57.6 to set a new course record at LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course. With the performance, Gapes also became the first woman to break the 19-minute barrier on the course.
With this latest accolade, Gapes brings NC State's total to nine USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week honors. She also becomes just the third NC State athlete to earn the national honor twice in a single season and the first Wolfpack athlete to receive the recognition in two separate seasons.
