NEW ORLEANS, LA - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced Monday afternoon its National Athletes of the Week, with NC State's own Hannah Gapes earning Women's NCAA Division I National Athlete of the Week honors.
The USTFCCCA's national recognition is based on the top performances across collegiate competition, including times, marks, points scored and individual event victories.
This marks the second time Gapes has earned national honors from the USTFCCCA. Her previous recognition came last season during the week of October 6.
Gapes earned this week's honor following a standout performance at the Joe Piane Notre Dame Invitational over the weekend, where she captured the individual title in the women's 5K. Gapes crossed the finish line in 15:22.6, setting a new personal best and recording the fastest women's 5K time ever run on the course.
The race also marked Gapes' first competition in the Wolfpack's red and white this season. She entered the meet following a ninth-place finish in the women's road 5K at the World Athletics Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark.
Gapes' performance at Notre Dame continues an impressive stretch of competition and adds another national accolade to her growing list of accomplishments.
