TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The No. 1-ranked NC State women's cross country team closed out its regular season Friday morning with a second-place finish among 43 teams at the Under Armour Pre-Nationals meet in Terre Haute, Indiana. The Wolfpack men finished 17th out of 44 teams, scoring 500 points.
The highlight of the morning came from fifth-year standout Hannah Gapes, who captured the individual title in the women's 6K with a time of 18:57.6. In the process, Gapes set a new LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course record, becoming the first woman to break the 19-minute barrier on the course.
Gapes' historic performance comes just two weeks after she claimed the individual title at the Joe Piane Invitational in South Bend, where she recorded a personal best in the women's 5K and set a new course record. Her performance at Joe Piane earned her USTFCCCA National Athlete of the Week and ACC Performer of the Week honors.
Junior Bethany Michalak added a top-10 finish for the Wolfpack, placing eighth in 19:29.9. Junior Angelina Napoleon followed closely behind, finishing 13th in 19:41.0.
On the men's side, sophomore Philip Blum led the Pack for the second consecutive meet, finishing 35th among 339 competitors.
In the Women's White 6K, sophomore Jessica Jazwinski led the way with a runner-up finish in 20:34.0. The Wolfpack also placed three additional runners in the top 10, with Kaylie Armitage finishing fourth in 20:41.9, Kate Putman placing sixth in 20:53.2, and Brooke Chapman taking ninth in 21:04.4.Â
