The Land O' Lakes, Fla. native smashed two homers in the win to claim the top spot in the conference as the home run leader.
How it Happened
- The Pirates attempted to get two batters on to start the game but the Wolfpack defense was solid and picked up a 6-4-3 double play to secure the first two outs in the top of the first.
- Teagan Thrunk recorded the first hit of the outing in the bottom of the second, for either team with a double to right center that allowed Michele Tarpey to score.
- Graduate catcher Payden Bordeau would later hit a sacrifice fly to bring home Thrunk. Senior Taylor Ensley followed it up with a single down the left line to bring home Kendall Simmers, who reached base due to a fielding error by the Pirates. NC State held a 3-0 lead heading into the second frame.
- The Pirates responded in the top of the second with an RBI double to minimize the deficit to one but Tori Ensley managed to score on a passed ball in the bottom of the frame to push the Pack's lead back to three.
- East Carolina minimized the deficit back to one in the third after a two run home run from Emma Jackson.
- The bottom of the fourth allowed NC State to push the lead to two after Tori Ensleyy grounded out to third and Gabi Wilson, who entered as a pinch runner for Hannah Goodwin, scored.
- The Pirates posted two more runs in the top of the fifth to tie the game five all after back-to-back hits allowed runners to score.
- With an out on the board in the bottom of the fifth, junior Hannah Church worked a full count before smashing a ball to right field to put the Pack back in front.
- After the Pirates picked up the second out of the frame, both Bordeau and Taylor Ensley were walked to put two on for Goodwin. The infielder fell behind in the count, 0-2, but smashed the third pitch thrown her way past the left field wall to push the Pack ahead, 9-5.
- Sophomore right handed pitcher Carly Maxton picked up three strikeouts in the top of the sixth to keep the Pirates off the board.
- With one on base and one out in the bottom of the sixth, Church added two insurance runs to the board after she smashed a ball to the building in center field. The hit marked her 10th homer of the season and claimed the top spot in the ACC for most homers this season.
- The Pirates attempted to rally in the seventh but the opportunity was cut short after the Pack picked up the final out.
- Maxton was in the circle for all 21 outs and threw the entire seven innings to earn the win and move to 6-2 on the season. Redshirt-junior pitcher Wynne Gore faced two batters in the fifth before Maxton re-entered the game to close it out.
- The Pack moves to 16-10 on the season. The win marks the 46th under the leadership of head coach Lindsay Leftwich, the 613th in program history, and the 276th at Dail Stadium.
The Pack will host Notre Dame for the first home conference series of the season. The two teams will begin the series on Friday, March 14th at 7pm on ACC Network.
