Softball Earns Two Wins on First Day of Joan Joyce Classic

BOCA RATON, Fla. – The NC State softball team defeated Purdue, 7-3, and Dartmouth, 3-0, on the first day of the Joan Joyce Classic hosted by Florida Atlantic on Friday, Feb. 14.
The wins moves the Wolfpack to 5-2 on the season, marking the best start through seven games since 2022 when NC State started the season 6-1.
Carly Maxton paced the Wolfpack in the win over Dartmouth as she finished with a career high 10 strikeouts in the shutout. She is only the second pitcher on the NC State staff to record double digits strikeouts in their career.

The Wolfpack is set to return to Joan Joyce Field for day two of the Joan Joyce Classic hosted by FAU. The Pack will face Purdue at 1:30pm before facing houst Florida Atlantic, who received votes and a #25 ranking in recent polls, at 3:45pm. Both games will be streamed on FloSports.

How it Happened
- Freshman Kendall Simmers recorded the first hit of the meeting with a single down the right field line in the top of the first, allowing two to score. Simmer's two RBI's put NC State on the board first, 2-0.
- In the top of the second with no outs, senior Taylor Ensley doubled down the right field line to bring home two and put NC State on the board first, 4-0.
- During the bottom of the second, back-to-back hits by the Boilermakers allowed three to score and minimize the Pack's lead to one.
- The top of the fifth saw Hannah Church record her first homer in a Wolfpack jersey as she drilled a ball past the left field wall and tallied two RBI's.
- With two outs on the board in the top of the sixth, Taylor Ensley worked a 2-2 count before smashing a ball to right field to record her third homer of the season and the Pack's seventh run of the outing.
- Despite efforts by the Boilermakers, NC State continued to dominate.
- Wynne Gore pitched the first four innings, finished with three strikeouts, and was credited with the win.
- Madison Inscoe was credited with the save as she pitched the final three innings for the Pack and finished with four strikeouts.
- Taylor Ensley led the Pack with three hits as three others members of the squad finished with two RBI's each.
How it Happened
- Both teams were unable to get anything going offensively as the first two innings were three up, three down in both the top and bottom of the frames.
- In the bottom of the third with two outs and two on, senior Hannah Goodwin slammed a ball down the left field line and past the wall to put NC State on the board, 3-0. The homer was her first of the season.
- Dartmouth recorded three hits in the outing but could not get into scoring position.
- Sophomore right handed pitcher Carly Maxton had a career outing as she finished with 10 strikeouts, catching six batters swinging and four looking. She was credited with the win and it marks the second of the season for her, in addition to her second shutout this year.
- Goodwin led the Pack offensively with two hits and three RBI's.
