Wolfpack Takes Home Two Team Victories at Joe Piane Invitational

SOUTH BEND, IN - The NC State cross country teams returned to action today, claiming two event wins at the Joe Piane Invitational hosted by Notre Dame.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Kelsey Chmiel got things going by taking second place in the women's blue 5000m race with a time of 16:15.1. Freshman Leah Stephens also finished in the top-five with a fourth-place time of 16:24.0. Grace Hartman clocked in at 16:36.6 to take ninth before Gionna Quarzo (16:51.0) and Jenna Schulz (16:51.1) took 14th and 15th, respectively. The women's team finished in first place with 44 total points.
The next victory of the day for the Pack came in the men's open 5 mile race. Zach Hughes crossed the finish line in third place with a time of 24:35.4 and was joined in the top-10 by Matthew Bogdan, who placed sixth after running 24:47.4. Patrick Gibbons (25:25.0), Kevin Antczak (25:28.2), and Miles Ally (25:30.7) finished in 16th, 18th, and 20th to make up the top-five finishes for NC State. The squad finished the race with 18 points and first overall place.
The Wolfpack was also represented in the women's open 5000m. Angelina Napoleon ran unattached and finished third with a time of 17:01.4. Fellow first-year Kate Putman also ran unattached, clocking in at 17:44.4 to take sixth.
In the men's blue 5 mile, the men's team placed fourth with 174 points. Brett Gardner was the first Pack athlete to finish and he did so in 23:54.9 to take 17th. Daniel McGoey followed him, finishing 23rd with a time of 23:59.4. The rest of the top-five finishes in the race for NC State were represented by Hannes Burger (24:13.0), Toby Gualter (24:16.2), and JJ Malach (24:27.6), who finished 42nd, 43rd, and 49th, respectively.
