Tuohy Goes Back to Back, Wolfpack Women Claim Eighth-Consecutive ACC Championship

TALLAHASSEE, FL - The NC State men's and women's cross country teams returned to action today, competing in the 2023 ACC Cross Country Championships hosted by Florida State. The morning was highlighted by the Wolfpack women's team taking home its eighth-straight ACC Cross Country Title.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Katelyn Tuohy started the day doing what she does best, winning. The Stony Point, N.Y. native clocked in at 19:22.8 to finish in first and claim her second-straight individual ACC Cross Country Championship. Her efforts helped lead the women's squad to its eighth-straight ACC Cross Country Championship. The team finished in first with 37 total points.
Tuohy's win now marks the the fifth time in as many years that the individual women's ACC Champion is a member of the NC State program. In addition to Tuohy's back to back titles the past two seasons, Kelsey Chmiel (2021), Dominique Clairmonte (2020), and Elly Henes (2019) have also managed to capture individual cross country conference championships in the past half-decade.
Tuohy was joined in the top-three by Chmiel, who ran a time of 19:36.5 and finished third to achieve All-ACC status for the fifth time in her career. Leah Stephens showed why she has won ACC Freshman of the Week twice this season, as the first-year runner timed in at 20:01.4 to take eighth and recieve All-ACC accolades.
Sam Bush returned to action as well for the red and white, producing a time of 20:10.7 to finish in 11th and earn All-ACC honors. Gionna Quarzo (20:19.6) and Grace Hartman (20:21.4) will also return to Raleigh as All-ACC performers after finishing 14th and 19th, respectively.
On the men's side of things, Zach Hughes was the first Pack runner to cross the finish line as he placed 28th with a time of 23:58.7. The men's team finished in eighth place with a total of 207 points. Toby Gualter (24:09.6), Brett Gardner (24:12.2), Jake Toomey (24:12.9), and JJ Malach (24:19.3) rounded out the top-five men's finishers for NC State.
