LAKE NONA, Fla. – NC State women's tennis (20-5) continues its historic NCAA Championships run on Friday morning. The sixth-seeded Wolfpack will face second-seeded Texas (29-1) in the national semifinal match at 11 a.m. from the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona, Fla.
With a victory over the Longhorns, NC State would advance to Saturday's national championship match where it would face either No. 1 North Carolina or No. 5 Pepperdine.
ATTENDANCE POLICY AND TICKETS:
The NCAA has updated its policies regarding the capacity of its championships events. As a result, capacity for the ongoing NCAA Division I Tennis Championships will increase to 100% for all remaining sessions. Tickets are on sale for all remaining sessions of the team event, which concludes Saturday, as well as for the individual event which runs Sunday, May 23 through Friday, May 28.
A WIN ON FRIDAY WOULD:
• Be the highest ranked victory in NC State women's tennis history
• Be the Wolfpack's 11th victory over a nationally-ranked opponent this season
• Make NC State the fifth ACC team (Miami, Duke, Georgia Tech, UNC) of all time to earn a berth in the national championship match
• Extend the Pack's winning streak to five matches
WOLFPACK IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT:
• NC State is amidst its deepest NCAA Championships run as it appears in the program's first-ever national semifinal on Friday. The Pack reached the Round of 16 for the first time in 2019 and the second time in program history this season but had never advanced past that round until Sunday's victory.
• With its Wednesday win over Georgia, the Wolfpack became the sixth ACC team in league history to reach an NCAA Championships semifinal, joining Miami, Duke, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame and UNC.
• The 2021 NCAA Championships berth marks NC State's 11th overall appearance and its fifth season in a row qualifying for the event under the leadership of head coach Simon Earnshaw. That streak continues to stand as a program best.
• NC State hosted the first two rounds of the tournament after hosting for the first time in 2019. The Pack's home record now stands at a perfect 4-0 in NCAA Championships action.
• The Wolfpack has defeated VCU (4-0), No. 36 Iowa State (4-2), No. 35 USC (4-1) and No. 3 Georgia (4-2) in its first four rounds of the 2021 NCAA Championships.
• The team's quarterfinal victory over the Bulldogs matched the highest ranked win in program history, tying last season's mark which was also set against the third-ranked 2020 Georgia squad.
ABOUT THE PACK:
NC State has been ranked in the national top 10 in each of the last five polls. The team reached a season-best No. 4 in the middle of April and has been featured in the top 15 every week since Feb. 26, 2019.
In total, the Wolfpack has defeated eight nationally-ranked opponents on its way to posting an 18-5 record. Three members of the team (Anna Rogers, Alana Smith, Adriana Reami) were recognized as 2021 All-ACC honorees following the conference tournament, marking the most for the program in a single season.
NC State won nine of its final 10 matches of the regular season on its way to finishing third in the ACC standings. That included a seven-game winning streak that included six-straight ACC victories from March 12 through April 1. In the midst of that streak, the Pack most notably earned big 4-3 road wins at No. 29 Miami and No. 13 Duke.
SETTING THE TONE:
NC State has won the doubles point in its last seven dual matches, with that streak beginning on April 9 against Virginia Tech. The Pack has lost just one match in that span of time. On the season, NC State has dropped the doubles point in just four of its 25 matches.
PACK RISING:
In 2014 (the season before Earnshaw was hired as head coach) and 2015 (Earnshaw's first dual season at NC State), the Wolfpack women's tennis team went a combined 3-25 in ACC matches. Since then, NC State is 46-29 in league play in the last six campaigns. That includes the 2020 shortened season in which the Pack was off to a 5-1 ACC start.
In the last three seasons alone (2018-19, 2019-20 and 2020-21), the Pack has posted a combined 62-15 (26-7 ACC) record. That once again takes into consideration the shortened 2020 dual campaign when the Pack secured its best start to a season in program history.
FRESHMAN PHENOM:
Wolfpack rookie Abigail Rencheli has not shied away from the big moments this season and has compiled a perfect 3-0 singles record in completed matches during the NCAA Championships. Her victory against No. 52 Marta Gonzalez of Georgia was her second ranked win of the season, besting her previous season-best against the nation's No. 117 player.
Ten of Rencheli's 13 dual singles wins have come in straight sets, and NC State is a perfect 13-0 in matches when she wins her singles court.
SCOUTING THE LONGHORNS:
Texas is making its 36th NCAA Championships appearance after compiling a 29-1 record in dual matches this season. The Longhorns won NCAA team titles in 1993 and 1995 and also reached the 1992 and 2005 title matches. The team is ranked second nationally, a spot that it has held for the majority of the season.
Anna Turati (No. 35), Peyton Stearns (No. 37), Lulu Sun (No. 62) Kylie Collins (No. 72) and Charlotte Chavatipon (No. 76) are all ranked in the top 100 in singles. Texas also has two ranked doubles pairs in Collins and Sun (No. 19) and Stearns and Chavatipon (No. 47).
Friday is just the second meeting between NC State and Texas. The teams met for the first time in history at the ITA National Team Indoors event in 2020. The Longhorns won a hard- fought battle by a 4-3 score that came down to a three setter between Fernanda Labrana and Lexi Keberle on court four.
In that match, NC State won the doubles point and also got singles victories from Adriana Reami and Jaeda Daniel. Reami's win over Ardri Nagy was the 100th singles victory of her career.
UP NEXT:
Following the conclusion of the team tournament, the singles and doubles championships will also be played in Lake Nona from May 23-28.
