LAKE NONA, Fla. – The sixth-ranked NC State women's tennis team (19-5) preps for a top-10 matchup in its NCAA quarterfinals debut, as it is set to take on third-ranked Georgia on Wednesday, May 19. The match is set for an 11 a.m. first serve from the USTA National Campus in Lake Nona.
With a victory over the Bulldogs, the Wolfpack would advance to the national semifinals where it would face either No. 7 Florida State or No. 2 Texas.
WOLFPACK IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT:
• NC State is amidst its deepest NCAA Championships run as it appears in the program's first-ever quarterfinals on Sunday. The Pack reached the Round of 16 for the first time in 2019 and the second time in program history this season but had never advanced past that round until Sunday.
• The 2021 NCAA Championships berth marks NC State's 11th overall appearance and its fifth season in a row qualifying for the event under the leadership of head coach Simon Earnshaw. That streak continues to stand as a program best.
• NC State hosted the first two rounds of the tournament after host- ing for the first time in 2019. The Pack's home record now stands at a perfect 4-0 in NCAA Championships action.
• The Wolfpack has defeated VCU (4-0), No. 36 Iowa State (4-2) and No. 35 USC (4-1) in the first three rounds of the 2021 NCAA Championships.
ABOUT THE PACK:
NC State has been ranked in the national top 10 in each of the last five polls. The team reached a season-best No. 4 in the middle of April and has been featured in the top 15 every week since Feb. 26, 2019.
In total, the Wolfpack has defeated eight nationally-ranked opponents on its way to posting an 18-5 record. Three members of the team (Anna Rogers, Alana Smith, Adriana Reami) were recognized as 2021 All-ACC honorees following the conference tournament, marking the most for the program in a single season.
NC State won nine of its final 10 matches of the regular season on its way to finishing third in the ACC standings. That included a seven-game winning streak that included six-straight ACC victories from March 12 through April 1. In the midst of that streak, the Pack most notably earned big 4-3 road wins at No. 29 Miami and No. 13 Duke.
MAKING HISTORY:
For the first time in program history, NC State will have multiple singles players and multiple doubles pairs in the national draws for the NCAA Women's Tennis Singles and Doubles Championships. Anna Rogers and Alana Smith earned at-large bids to compete in the 64-player singles draw, and the pair will also compete together in the doubles draw along with Adriana Reami and Jaeda Daniel.
Rogers is the No. 6 overall seed in the singles draw, and Daniel and Reami are a top-eight seed in doubles. Both of the seedings automatically garner those players status as All-Americans.
SCOUTING THE BULLDOGS:
Georgia is 23-1 on the season and is making its NCAA Championships appearance for the 34th time in a row. The team was a national finalist in 2019, falling to Stanford in the championship match.
Katarina Jokic (No. 4), Meg Kowalski (No. 20), Marta Gonzalez (No. 52), Lea Ma (No. 55) and Morgan Coppoc (No. 68) are all ranked in singles, and the Bulldogs also boasts the nation's No. 6 doubles pair in Ariana Arsenault and Jokic.
Sunday is just the fourth meeting between NC State and Georgia. The Bulldogs own the slight 2-1 advantage all time, but the Wolfpack took the last matchup between the two teams. Then-No. 8 NC State beat third-ranked Georgia 4-1 in the consolation draw of the 2020 ITA Indoor National Championship.
The victory was the highest ranked win for NC State in program history, eclipsing the 2020 team's previous victory over No. 9 South Carolina. NC State won the doubles point with victories from its top two pairs, and Alana Smith, Anna Rogers and Adriana Reami added singles wins with Smith clinching on the top court.
UP NEXT:
Following the conclusion of the team tournament, the singles and doubles championships will also be played in Lake Nona from May 23-28.
