Wolfpack Men and Women Each Take First at Virginia Tech Invitational

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The NC State cross country programs began their seasons with wins on Friday, competing at the Virginia Tech Invitational against Virginia Tech and Duke.
WOMEN'S 6K RECAP:
The Wolfpack took the top five spots in the 6K and seven of the top 10. Wofford transfer Hannah Steelman made her debut for NC State at the tri-meet, taking the individual title with a 20:36.2.
Redshirt senior Dominique Clairmonte finished in second place (20:43.6), followed by sophomore Kelsey Chmiel (third, 20:52.3), redshirt junior Nevada Mareno (fourth, 20:58.3) and junior Savannah Shaw (fifth, 21:01.1).
Rounding out finishes in the top 10 was redshirt sophomore Ashley Holt (seventh, 21:04.9) and sophomore Samantha Bush (10th, 21:31.0).
Redshirt sophomore Mariah Howlett tabbed a 13th-place finish with a time of 21:52.5, and redshirt senior Anna Vess posted a 22:02.8 to finish 17th. Redshirt sophomore Sarah LaTour rounded out the Wolfpack returners (22:18.7).
True freshman Claire Walters (21:51.7) posted a 12th-place finish, and fellow true freshmen Jenna Schulz (22:00.9), Gionna Quarzo (22:26.6) and Alyssa Hendrix (23:00.0) each ran in their first collegiate meet. Redshirt freshmen Lulu Black (22:10.6) and Shannon Sefton (22:39.7) both suited up for NC State for the first time as well.
MEN'S 8K RECAP:
Four of the top five individual finishers were members of the Pack, led by redshirt senior Joe Bistritz claiming the individual title (24:37.3). Graduate student JP Flavin took second (24:39.5) and was followed by senior Ian Shanklin (third, 24:41.9).
Redshirt sophomore Nate Kawalec tabbed a fifth-place finish with a time of 25:02.7 while true freshman Ian Harrison made his debut for NC State, running a 25:08.1 for eighth place.
Fellow true freshmen Brett Gardner additionally ran for the Wolfpack for the first time, finishing in 10th (25:13.7) while Kevin Antczak posted a 25:48.5.
Redshirt freshman Ben Verchick (25:49.0), sophomore Peyton Barish (26:19.9), true freshman JJ Malach (26:55.9) and true freshman Jake Toomey (27:11.0) rounded out the Wolfpack men.

The Wolfpack will host a meet at the WakeMed Cross Country Course in Cary, N.C., on Wednesday, Oct. 7.
