NC State Defeated Wake Forest 5-2 on Friday night
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The No. 10 NC State women's tennis team battled to defeat No. 22 Wake Forest on the road on Friday to earn its 20th win of the season, the most in program history. The Pack's 5-2 victory extends its winning streak to 10 matches.
NC State improves to 20-3 (10-1) and Wake Forest drops to 17-6 (7-4) on the season. The Pack has won the past five meetings between the two teams.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles play, NC State took two of six first sets. No. 15 Anna Rogers squared the match at 1-1, earning her 14th ranked win of the season and fourth ranked singles victory in a row, defeating No. 33 Emma Davis in straight sets.
No. 112 Adriana Reami and No. 75 Alana Smith delivered clutch performances. After dropping the first set, Reami rattled off two sets, settling the score at 2-2. Smith gave NC State its first lead of the day (3-2) after forcing a tiebreaker to win her eighth straight singles match.
On court four, Liz Norman clinched the Pack's historic victory with a three-set defeat of Saby Nihalani. In the final set, Norman routed Nihalani, 6-1, to solidify the clutch performance by the sophomore.
Amanda Rebol collected NC State's fifth point of the day in the last singles match to finish. With the victory, Rebol became the first player in program history to record 10 conference wins in a season.
The Pack was swept in doubles action for just the second time this season. No. 9 Rogers and Smith were defeated for the first time since February by No. 37 Emma Davis and Chandler Carter. NC State is now 4-1 on the season when dropping the doubles point against ranked opponents.
Straight from the Pack: Head Coach Simon Earnshaw
"Wow. What can I say? This seems to keep happening. Against Miami, we really got ourselves in a tough spot, and we did the same today. Wake Forest outplayed us in doubles. We definitely could have done better there. We started singles a little bit slow expect for Anna, but it was very similar to the Miami match. We won five second sets. We managed to turn them all around, except for Bianca's. Anna was key in getting that match off the court.
"This team has a lot of heart. I think we understand that we don't always have to play our best tennis, but if we can just hang in there and keep trying to do the right things, eventually it will pay off. Today it did once again. I couldn't be more proud of the effort. It's just incredible. We have 20 wins and 10 ACC wins. We'll just keep going. We'll continue to build off this. We've got another tough day on Sunday against Florida State and Winthrop. Hopefully every can come out and support the Pack. Go Pack!"
Straight from the Pack: Liz Norman
"It was a great feeling to be able to clinch the match for my team. We all fought hard on every court after losing the doubles point and a lot of the first sets. However, we were all resilient and came out on top at the end of the day. We are looking forward to celebrating our three seniors this Sunday and compete against another good team."
