MADISON, WIS. – The Wolfpack men's and women's cross country programs once again matched up against a field of the nation's best teams as they were in action at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet Saturday. Competing in the Cardinal races, one of two evenly-seeded fields for each gender, NC State's women took fifth place as a team, while the Wolfpack men finished 14th.
WOMEN'S CARDINAL 6K RECAP:
The No. 13 NC State women finished fifth overall in the Cardinal race, totaling 180 points from the top five scorers.
Junior Elly Henes crossed the finish line first for the Wolfpack women, placing ninth with a time of 20:23.7. Henes maintained a spot among the top 25 runners for the majority of the race on her way to finishing inside the top 10 for the first time this season.
Dominique Clairmonte followed behind her with a time of 20:39.1, which was good for 16th place. In her second meet as a member of the Wolfpack, senior transfer Nell Crosby clocked a personal-best 6K time of 20:55.6 on the way to finishing 32nd.
Savannah Shaw (56th, 21:17.5) and Isabel Zimmermann (67th, 21:22.4) rounded out the top five for the Wolfpack.
Other finishers for NC State included Nevada Mareno (109th, 21:48.2) and Julia Zachgo (114th, 21:50.5).
MEN'S CARDINAL 8K RECAP:
The Cardinal race pitted NC State's 26th-ranked men against 18 other national-ranked teams, as the Wolfpack took 14th place with 423 points.
Ian Shanklin was once again the Wolfpack's top finisher, placing 55th in 24:39.4. Gavin Gaynor also broke the 25-minute barrier, crossing the finish line in 24:50.6 for a 76th-place finish.
Finishing in just a matter of seconds from one another, Joe Bistritz (95th, 25:01.4), Edwin Rutto (100th, 25:04.9) and Elijah Moskowitz (102nd, 25:05.2) also scored as part of the Pack's top-five finishers.
Patrick Sheehan (111th, 25:09.4) and Philip Hall (194th, 25:58.9) were also in action in the Cardinal race.
GRAY RACES RECAP:
Both of NC State's women who ran the Gray race at the Wisconsin Pre-Nationals meet secured top-25 finishes. Heather Holt placed 9th in 21:50.3, and Anna Vess finished 25th with a time of 22:10.2.
On the men's side, Tim Bason finished line first for the Wolfpack, improving his personal-best time by over 35 seconds to cross the line in 25:10.7 for 13th place. Ben Barrett took 34th place in 25:52.2, and Tanis Baldwin placed 39th with a time of 26:04.7.
UP NEXT:
NC State will begin its postseason at the 2018 ACC Cross Country Championships on Friday, Oct. 26. The conference meet will be hosted by Boston College at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
