NC State hands Nebraska its first loss of the season
Â
In the nightcap, NC State dropped a 2-1 decision to Wisconsin. The Wolfpack moves to 4-4 on the year, while Nebraska is 7-1 and the Badgers improve to 5-3.
Â
Quick Hits (Versus Nebraska)
- NC State struck first in the contest, after Hanna Sommer was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to register
- Tyler Ross singled earlier in the inning and scored on Sommer's HBP. It was the first time this season that the Wolfpack has scored in the first inning.
- Nebraska countered in the bottom of the second with a solo home run from Alyvia Simmons to knot the score at one.
- The Cornhuskers extended the lead with a pair of runs in the fourth, but the Wolfpack had an answer the following inning.
- Meredith Burroughs clubbed a two-run homer over the fence in right center to tie the score, 3-3. It was her second of the season.
- A couple runs in the bottom of the frame helped Nebraska retake the lead 5-3.
- After Nebraska scored six runs in the top of the seventh on Friday, NC State decided to have a big seventh inning in the rematch as the Wolfpack scored eight runs in the frame.
- The Wolfpack sent 12 batters to the plate in the final frame, collecting seven hits and also capitalizing on two Nebraska errors.
- Burroughs had the big hit in the inning, as she homered for the second time in the contest, a three-run blast to right field. It was her first multi-homer game of her NC State career.
Â
Inside the Box Score
- Ross led the Wolfpack bats with a 3-for-5 performance at the plate, highlighted by two runs scored and an RBI.
- Burroughs was 2-for-5 with a career best five RBI, to go along with her first multi-home run game of her NC State career.
- Lana Van Dyken was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Molly Hutchison, Hanna Sommer and Hannah Yeager each had one hit.
Â
In the Pitcher's Circle
- Sophomore Harli Hubbard started in the circle and nearly earned the second complete game win of her career, throwing 6.1 innings to secure the win.
- She struck out four batters in the contest before giving way to Courtney Mirabella, who nailed down the final two outs of the game.
Â
Quick Hits (Versus Wisconsin)
- Sommer gave her NC State squad a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second with her first home run of the season, a solo blast to left field.
- Wisconsin was opportunistic in the top of the third, taking advantage of two errors by the Wolfpack defense to score a pair of unearned runs to gain a 2-1 lead.
- Taylor-Paige Stewart, the Badgers starting pitcher, stymied any thoughts of a Wolfpack rally as the squad held on for the 2-1 win.
- NC State's bats were limited to just two hits in the game, as Sommer and Brittany Nimmo each had a hit.
- Mirabella started in the circle for NC State and pitched well, striking out 10 batters in a hard-luck loss. She allowed just four hits and only allowed one extra base hit.
- Stewart for Wisconsin gave up just one run in a complete game win, striking out eight batters and walked just one.
