Junior Brittany Stanko scored her second goal of the season as the match neared its end, receiving a pass from teammate Alexa Allen and beating substitute goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin to the near post. The Wolfpack put together a few last-gasp efforts but was unable to even the score.
NC State (2-7-2, 0-3-0 ACC) was affected again by injuries on Sunday, as leading scorer and freshman Kayla Saager was forced to leave in the 11th minute and classmate Cailyn Boch also came off the field later in the first half. The Wolfpack was forced to shuffle its defensive alignment once again during the match and also began the contest without the services of regular starter Michelle Oestreich, who sustained an injury during the Duke match on Sept. 25.
"There's a way to play UNC, and play them well if you have all of your personnel," said head coach Tim Santoro. "We don't. We have a lot of injuries right now, though we were behind before some of that (the injuries) happened.
"The team carried out the game plan to the best of its ability, but we're just a little short in areas to match up with them (UNC-CH) over the course of 90 minutes."
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes had a strong match for the Wolfpack, recording six saves in the narrow defeat.
UNC-CH (6-2-1, 3-0-0 ACC) came out strong to start the match, recording multiple attempts on target before breaking through in the 20th minute. Following a spell of possession, Summer Green played a through ball to teammate Amber Munerlyn. The sophomore dribbled past an onrushing Stelljes and deposited the ball inside the far post to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.
The Tar Heels doubled their advantage in the 79th minute when Paige Nielsen collected a pass inside the area, turned, and scored inside the far post.
Stanko then halved UNC-CH's lead, revitalizing the Wolfpack and leading to one final charge to equalize.
"At the end of the match, we really came together and played as a team," Stanko said.
Following Stanko's goal, a scramble in the UNC-CH penalty area led to Allen attempting a shot which was ultimately blocked. A foul on the Wolfpack was whistled shortly thereafter, ending the scoring chance.
NC State will be back in action at home on Saturday, Oct. 4 against Pittsburgh. The Wolfpack and Panthers will kick off from Dail Soccer Field at 7 p.m. Saturday's match will be broadcast live on GoPack.com/AllAccess.
