RALEIGH - Despite outshooting the visiting Pittsburgh Panthers by a 21-13 margin, the NC State women's soccer team lost by a final score of 3-0 in the annual Kay Yow Pink Match at Dail Soccer Field on Saturday evening.
Roosa Arvas led the offensive effort for Pittsburgh (6-6-0, 2-2-0 ACC), scoring one goal and assisting on another. She registered four total shots, three of which were on target.
Jenna Kalwa had a strong match for the Wolfpack (2-8-2, 0-4-0 ACC), recording a game-high six shots throughout the course of the match. The junior was one of nine NC State student athletes to record at least one shot.
Pittsburgh took an early lead on Arvas' 13th-minute goal. The Panthers would carry this lead into the halftime break after outshooting NC State 8-4 in the opening 45 minutes.
The Wolfpack started the second half with serious attacking intent, piecing together multiple scoring opportunities immediately after the break. NC State came inches from tying the match in the 60th minute when Kalwa's free kick attempt from 30 yards out rang off the crossbar.
Pittsburgh doubled its lead in the 74th minute on a goal by Hanna Hannesdottir and would then ultimately put the match out of reach in the 81st when an Arvas pass led to a Taylor Pryce counterattack goal.
NC State will next be in action on Thursday, Oct. 9 at Louisville. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Cardinals is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Lynn Stadium.
