ALBUQUERQUE Junior Lauren Doughtie fired a four-over 76 on Tuesday during the first round of the NCAA Women’s Golf Championships at the UNM Championship Course. She is tied for 68th among a field of 126 competitors.
Doughtie, ranked No. 45 nationally, and the other five individuals teed off bright and early at 8 am MDT, Doughtie’s group from hole No. 10. She did not get off to the start one would like after bogeys at 10, 11 and 14. Mixed in was a birdie at No. 13 and the Suffolk, Va., native was at +2 after five holes.
She then steadied herself by making par the final four holes and made the turn at two-over (38).
Doughtie then showed her All-ACC form by posting birdie at No. 1, a 404-yard, par-4 that was statistically the hardest hole in the morning, playing nearly a stroke over the suggested par.
Four pars followed the birdie, and with four holes to play Doughtie was looking to post a steady 18-hole score to begin the 72-hole grind. However, she bogeyed Nos. 6, 7 and 8, but did rally to finish with par at No. 9.
Doughtie became the first women's golfer at NC State to qualify for the NCAA Championships when she tied for fifth at the NCAA Central Regional in Austin, Texas 10 days ago.
The NCAA Championships continue through Friday when the 72-hole tournament concludes.
