Doughtie Heads to NCAA's; Team Misses By One Shot
5/10/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Golf
AUSTIN, Texas Junior Lauren Doughtie qualified as an individual, but as a team, NC State fell short by one shot from making its first trip to the NCAA Women’s Golf Championship on Saturday at the NCAA Central Regional at the University of Texas Golf Club
The top eight teams at the regional move on to the NCAA Championship. The Wolfpack finished tied for 10th with a final 54-hole score of +39 (300-304-299=903) one shot behind LSU and Florida State, who tied for eighth place. LSU won the playoff over the Seminoles.
Unlike the first two rounds where the Pack started strong and then held on for a pair of good scores, the club started rather slow on Saturday from the back nine tees for a second straight day.
But when the ladies made the turn, there game turned up as well. After combining for only three birdies as a team on the back nine, Doughtie and Emily Street led the charge with six birdies over a five-hole stretch to get back into contention for that eighth and final spot in the standings.
The Wolfpack later had literally no room for error as the club was battling three other teams that were within a shot of each other. NC State did whatever it could as all four scoring players posted a par on the final hole, the par-5 9th. It just wasn’t enough.
Doughtie shot a one-over 73 today to finish tied for fifth overall among a field of 108 competitors. The No. 70 ranked golfer in the nation finished the tournament at 1 (69-73-73=215) to become the first NC State women’s golfer to advance to the NCAA Championship.
The top two individuals not playing on the eight qualifying teams earn a bid to compete at the 2008 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship.
Doughtie was the epitome of how the Wolfpack’s day went on Saturday as she bogeyed the first three holes this morning. She did get a stroke back with a birdie at No. 13 to make the turn at two-over. After giving one back with a bogey at No. 1, the junior showed her All-ACC form by posting birdie on three of the next four holes.
Stephanie Derrey, the lone senior on the club who missed graduation ceremonies back in Raleigh today, also struggled early with four bogeys over the first six holes.
But she settled down nicely by recording par the final 12 holes. Derrey tied her career-low score of four-over (73-71-76=220) to finish tied for 14th.
Street picked a fine time to fire her best round of the weekend with a one-over 71. Similar to her teammates, she got off to a slow start with a double bogey and a bogey at Nos. 13 and 14. But she rallied to play flawless golf the rest of her round. First it was a birdie at No. 16 to make the turn at two-over.
Then she birded Nos. 1, 3 and 4 and followed that with five consecutive pars, which was key to keeping the Wolfpack right in the hunt. The Forest City, N.C., native moved up 34 spots in the standings to finish tied for 41st at +12 (78-79-71=228).
Freshman Julie Saleeby fired her best round of the tournament with a seven-over 79 to finish tied for 84th at +24 (80-81-79=240). She was able to avoid the big number that hampered her the first two days
Sophomore Joanna Saleeby finished a rough 54 holes with an 86 to place in a tie for 13rd at +39 (82-87-86=255).
UCLA led wire-to-wire to garner the regional title with a team score of 3 (861), followed by Purdue at +7 (871) and Denver, who leapfrogged TCU, to finish up at +18 (882).
The 2008 NCAA Women’s Golf Championship takes place Tuesday-Friday, May 20-23 in Albuquerque, N.M. at the University of New Mexico Championship Golf Course.
