RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's soccer fell to visiting No. 7 Virginia, 7-0 on Friday, Sept. 26. The Wolfpack falls to 5-3-1, while the Cavaliers improve to 7-1-1 in their first Atlantic Coast Conference match this season.
Virginia got on the board early when sophomore Kelly Hammond took a shot straightaway in the box in the seventh minute. Sophomore Noelle Keselica scored just 30 seconds later into the right upper corner after senior Melissa Somadelis and Hammond gave her the assist. Freshman Ariel Thompson scored the Cavaliers their third goal in the 32nd minute from the left side off her left foot to slip it by NC State's Megan Connors. Virginia's final goal of the first half came in the 40th minute from junior Gillian Hatch who toed it into the top right corner. NC State had two opportunities to score with the first coming from senior forward Adrienne Barnes. Barnes lofted it 12 yards from the right side, but the shot went wide. Senior forward Lindsey Underwood took a free kick straightaway that landed in the hands of the Virginia goalkeeper Anne Abernathy.
The second half started out just like the first for Virginia as freshman Shannon Foley scored after two minutes of play from the left side off an assist from junior Lindsay Gusick. NC State took advantage off a corner kick to set up a shot from Barnes on the left side, but it too landed into the hands of Virginia keeper Christina de Vries. The Cavaliers came back to record their seventh goal of the match after junior Jamie Fabrizio took a ball from Keselica at the top of the box and placed it to the right of Connors in the top of the net. NC State held the Cavaliers to just five shots in the second half. Virginia's keepers combined for two saves, while NC State's Connors took care of six shots.
"We came out with a game plan today, but didn't execute it the way we had intended," said NC State head coach Laura Kerrigan. ""I am, however, proud of the fact that we fought to to end and did not give up. It showed a lot of heart. There are many teams in the country that would have given in, but we fought hard for 90 minutes."
The Wolfpack heads to High Point on Sunday, Sept. 28, for a 2 p.m. match, while the Cavaliers will play at Richmond on Monday, Sept. 29.
