HIGH POINT, N.C. - NC State women's soccer defeated High Point 4-0 on Sunday, Sept. 28. Junior Erin Griswold and freshman Carol Tognetti each netted twice. The Wolfpack improves to 6-3-1 overall, while High Point falls to 3-5-0.
The first half was held at the feet of the Wolfpack, but it took NC State most of it to score its first goal for the evening. At 6:59 Griswold ended the scoreless match after collecting a pass from sophomore Lydia McBath on the right flank. McBath was set up by Tognetti at midfield. The Pack took the 1-0 lead into the break. Overall, NC State outshot the Panthers 14-3, had 5-0 corners and a 3-0 shot on goal advantage.
The second half was again in NC State's favor, this time however the Wolfpack made good on three of its shots to complete the shutout. Griswold again took matters in her own hands, but much quicker than her first goal. It took her just under four minutes to net her second goal of the match after she toed a pass from sophomore Lindsey DeLorenze at midfield. The third goal came a bit later when Tognetti took advantage of one of NC State's nine corner kicks taken by senior Tara Knauss. Tognetti waited near the right post and volleyed in a shot that kissed off the forehead of freshman Megan Buescher in the box at 60:54. The midfielder collected her third goal of her career six minutes later. Buescher took a throw-in to the head of senior Lindsey Underwood on the left side who then passed it off to Tognetti, who then headed it in as well.
In the net for the Pack was again freshman Megan Connors who earned her fourth win of the year after making one save on a shot from High Point's Tanya Wolf early in the second half. Sophomore Kim Selz checked in at 13:59 to replace Connors, but the defensive effort, which included Buescher, Knauss and a first-time starter in freshman Karla Hutton, held the Panthers to just seven total shots.
NC State now turns its attention to Clemson next Friday, Oct. 3, 7 p.m. in South Carolina.
