RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State women's tennis assistant coach David Secker has announced that he will step down from his position with the program to accept an opportunity outside of college tennis. Secker spent nine seasons in Raleigh, joining head coach Simon Earnshaw's staff in 2018 after previously playing for Earnshaw from 2003-06 and serving as an assistant coach under him at Armstrong Atlantic State University for six seasons.
"Dave and I have spent the better part of two decades working together," said Earnshaw. "He played a huge role in the rise of our programs and then subsequent success at both NC State and Armstrong. It's always a bittersweet moment when someone that's been so impactful with so many student-athletes, as well as with both the campus community and my own family moves on. At the same time, Dave has a skill set and work ethic where there was always going to be another challenge and situation that he would move on to at some point, and we were fortunate to be able to retain him as long as we did. I speak for everyone that he will be missed and that we all look forward to him excelling at the next stop in his career."
During his nine seasons with the Wolfpack, Secker played a key role in the team's rise into one of the nation's premier programs. NC State advanced to the NCAA Tournament in every eligible season during his tenure, highlighted by the program's first NCAA Championship match appearance in 2023, four NCAA Elite Eight appearances in the last six seasons and seven consecutive Sweet 16 appearances.
Secker also helped coach the Wolfpack to a pair of NCAA Doubles Championships. In 2022, he coached Jaeda Daniel and Nell Miller to NC State's first national championship in program history. Three years later, he helped Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe capture the program's second NCAA doubles title.
In 2023 and 2026 NC State Women's Tennis captured the first two ACC Championships in program history. Throughout his time in Raleigh, Secker coached 12 players to All-America honors across singles and doubles competition. Three of those players, Alana Smith, Anna Rogers and Diana Shnaider went on to reach the WTA Top 100 in either singles or doubles.
Since Secker joined the staff in 2018, NC State has won 199 dual matches, including a program-record 28-win campaign in 2023, when the Wolfpack advanced to the NCAA Championship match and finished as the national runner-up.
Secker's final season with the Wolfpack added another accolade to his decorated tenure, as he was named the 2026 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Assistant Coach of the Year.
