Wolfpack Takes Down Texas to Advance to Elite Eight

RALEIGH, N.C. - Eighth-seeded NC State women's tennis battled past ninth-seeded Texas, 4-2, in the NCAA Super Regional round Friday night at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center to advance to the Elite Eight for the first time since 2023.
Texas claimed the doubles point with wins on courts one and two. No. 71 Anastasia Abbagnato and Elizabeth Ionescu defeated No. 3 Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe, 6-2, before Mia Slama and Lavinia Tanasie evened the round with a 6-1 win over Salma Drugdova and Eszter Meri. The Longhorns secured the point with a 7-5 victory on court two by Carmen Herea and Christasha McNeil over No. 49 Anna Zyryanova and Jasmine Conway.
Singles play turned into a back-and-forth battle beginning with No. 66 Tanasie leveling the match at 1-1 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over McNeil. Texas regained the lead with a victory on court six before No. 26 Slama responded with another one of the biggest wins of her career, defeating No. 3 Carmen Herea, 7-5, 6-0, to tie the match at two.
No. 46 Zyryanova then gave NC State its first lead of the night, earning a top 10 victory in her final match at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center with a 7-6(4), 6-1 win over No. 6 Abbagnato.
The deciding point came from Osuigwe on court five. After dropping the opening set, the freshman rallied to win the final two sets, 6-4 and 7-5, clinching the victory and sending the Wolfpack to Athens.
The win marks NC State's first Elite Eight appearance since 2023 and the fourth under head coach Simon Earnshaw.
