CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The NC State softball team dropped a 3-1 outing to No. 23 Virginia Friday evening at Palmer Park after a pitcher's duel.

The Pack drops to 25-21 overall and 6-12 in conference play.

How It Happened

NC State threatened immediately in the first, loading the bases with one out on a Maia Townsend single, a Carly Short hit-by-pitch and a Kendall Simmers walk, but Virginia escaped the jam to keep the Wolfpack off the board.
The Wolfpack struck first in the third inning. Lily Livingston laced a one-out triple to left field before Morgen Talley delivered an RBI single up the middle to give NC State a 1-0 lead.
Rylee Wyman was sharp early, holding the Cavaliers scoreless through the first three innings while NC State maintained its one-run advantage.
Virginia evened the score in the fourth when Macee Eaton doubled and later came around to score on an RBI single from Kelsey Hackett.
After Virginia turned to Courtney Layne in relief, the Wolfpack managed just two hits over the final three innings and were retired in order in the sixth.
The Cavaliers broke through in the sixth. Following a walk and an NC State throwing error that moved the go-ahead run into scoring position, Reagan Hickey launched a two-run homer to left field for the decisive runs.
NC State brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh after Townsend recorded her second hit of the night, but Virginia closed out the 3-1 victory.
