RALEIGH, N.C. - Nearly completing a comeback from a 3-1 deficit, No. 9 NC State women's tennis fell in a heartbreaking 4-3 loss to No. 39 Miami Sunday afternoon at J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The match, which lasted just over five hours, began outdoors before being moved inside due to rain showers in Raleigh. The shift indoors sparked the Wolfpack's comeback effort, but the Hurricanes ultimately secured the win on the final court of the day.
NC State swept the doubles action to take an early 1-0 lead in the dual. The second-ranked duo of Gabriella Broadfoot and Victoria Osuigwe opened the round with a 6-2 win on court one before No. 57 Jasmine Conway and Anna Zyryanova clinched the doubles point with a 6-3 victory on court two. Mia Slama and Lavinia Tanasie completed the doubles sweep with a 6-4 win on court three.
In singles play, Miami surged ahead with straight-set victories on courts two and three and a three-set win on court four to build a 3-1 advantage.
After the match was paused and moved indoors due to rain, Conway sparked the Wolfpack comeback with a three-set win on court six, defeating Daria Volosova 6-3, 4-6, 6-1.
Victoria Osuigwe then tied the match at 3-3 on court five, rallying from a set down to defeat Aely Arai 6-7(6), 6-2, 6-4.
The dual ultimately came down to a ranked battle on court one, where No. 94 Raquel Gonzalez edged No. 41 Mia Slama in a tightly contested three-set match, 6-7(6), 7-6(4), 7-5, to give Miami the top-10 conference victory.
