Seventh Inning Rally Falls Short at UNC in Series Opener

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State softball team dropped the series opener at UNC, 2-1, Thursday evening in Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels wasted no time posted two on the board in the opening frame, but the Wolfpack defense shut them out for the following six innings.
Junior utility player MaKayla Marbury led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to center field to get the Pack on the board. Freshman Taryn Massey laid down her second hit of the evening with a single to right field to follow Marbury.
With one out on the board, junior Ellie Goins earned a walk to keep things going, but the Tar Heels grabbed the final two outs to end the game.
Massey and senior Taylor Ensley each tallied two hits in the outing, while Simmers and Marbury posted one.
Junior Rylee Wyman threw all six innings and recorded three strikeouts.
The Wolfpack will return to Chapel Hill on Friday, April 18 at 5pm for game two of the series. It will be streamed on ACCNX.
