TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The NC State softball team used a sixth inning rally to tie the second meeting with No. 7/8 Florida State and force an extra inning, but the Noles hit an RBI single that gave them the win, 5-4, in the bottom of the eighth.
The Wolfpack moves to 21-13 on the season and 4-7 in conference play.
How it Happened
The Pack will return to Joanne Graf Field on Sunday, March 30 to take on the Seminoles for the final time. First pitch is slated for 12pm on ACCNX.
The Wolfpack moves to 21-13 on the season and 4-7 in conference play.
How it Happened
- Graduate Michele Tarpey was hit by the first pitch of the game to occupy first. She would later score after catcher Payden Bordeau hit a single to shallow right field to get the Pack on the board first.
- The Noles posted two in the bottom half of the first after a double and single allowed runners to score.
- With two outs on the board in the top of the third, senior Taylor Ensley doubled to left field to get the Pack into scoring position but would be left on base after the Noles picked up the final out.
- The Seminoles took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the third after a two run homer from Katie Dack.
- Bordeau led off the fourth inning with a single through the left side to tally her second hit of the outing and freshman Kam Munson entered to pinch run. Munson would be caught stealing but fellow freshman Kendall Simmers would be walked after working a full count to have one on base and one out.
- Junior Rylee Wyman entered the circle in the bottom of the fourth for the Wolfpack to take over for redshirt-sophomore Wynne Gore. Gore threw three innings and finished with one strikeout.
- Junior MaKayla Marbury recorded a single in the top of the fifth but would be tagged out at second on the advance.
- Ensley led off the sixth inning with a double to right field to mark her second of the outing. Junior Hannah Church singled down the left line to bring home Lisey St. Jean, who entered to pinch run for Ensley.
- Simmers recorded a single up the middle to move Gabi Wilson, who pinch ran for Church, into scoring position. Sophomore Tori Ensley hit the first pitch thrown her way to record a single to center and load the bases for Hannah Goodwin.
- Goodwin followed suit and singled up the middle to drive home both Wilson and Simmers to tie the game four-all.
- Despite giving up a hit in the bottom of the sixth, the Pack defense was solid and kept the Seminoles off the board.
- Tarpey led off the seventh inning with a walk but was later tagged out at second after Ensley reached base on a fielder's choice.
- The Pack picked up three quick outs in the bottom of the seventh, highlighted by two strikeouts from Wyman, to keep the Noles off the board and send the game into extra innings.
- Bordeau led off the eighth inning with a 13-pitch at bat that ended with being thrown ball four for her to occupy first. She would later advance to second after a sacrifice bunt from Simmers. The Noles challenged that Bordeau left early for second but after review, it was confirmed she did not. FSU brought in its fourth arm to the circle in hopes of slowing the Pack. The opportunity for NC State to score was cut short after the Noles picked up the final two outs.
- The Seminoles were able to load the bases in the bottom of the eighth and an RBI single from Isa Tores gave the Noles the win.
