RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State sophomore guard Paul McNeil, Jr., made a school record 11 three-pointers on his way to 47 points as the Pack defeated Texas Southern, 108-72, Wednesday night inside Reynolds Coliseum.
McNeil, Jr., started the game off red-hot as he made his first five three-point attempts, all in the first five minutes of the game, as the Pack raced out to a 22-7 lead.
The Rockingham, N.C., native would add two more three-pointers in the first half as he went into the halftime locker room with seven three-pointers and 26 total points.
The 26 first half points were the most in a half by an NC State player since TJ Warren had 26 points in the second half of his 41 point at Pitt on March 3, 2014.
McNeil, Jr., started the final 20 minutes by draining his first two three-point attempts, tying the school-record with 15:40 remaining as he buried a triple as he was fouled.
McNeil., Jr., subbed out at the 15:40 mark and remained on the bench for more than five minutes of game time until checking back in with 9:20 left in the game.
He missed his first two three-point attempts after checking back in, but finally broke the school record with his 10th three-pointer with 3:34 to play.
Three possessions later, McNeil., Jr., made his 11th and final three of the night, tying the ACC record for most three-pointers in a single game.
He now shares the ACC record with Georgia Tech's Dennis Scott (12/28/88) and Wake Forest's Craig Dawson (2/13/02).
McNeil ended with a final stat line of 12-for-18 shooting, including 11-of-17 from three-point range and also was a perfect 12-of-12 from the foul line.
He also grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds in the win as he had his first career double-double.
McNeil, Jr.'s 47 points are tied with Sammy Ranzino (1/23/51 vs. Virginia Tech) for the fifth-most points in a single game in program history.
The 47 points are the most by an ACC player since Rodney Monroe – NC State's all-time leading scorer – had 48 against Georgia Tech on Jan. 13, 1991.
McNeil, Jr.'s 47 points are the second-most points scored by a Division I player this season and his 11 three-pointers are tied for the second-most by a DI player this season.
McNeil was joined in double figures by Jerry Deng who scored a season-high 14 points.
No other NC State player reached double figures but Alyn Breed and Tre Holloman each had nine while Ven-Allen Lubin and Quadir Copeland chipped in seven. Copeland also had a season-high nine assists in the win.
NC State shot 50.7 percent from the field and made 17 three-pointers in the win.
The 17 three-pointers are the third-most in a single game in program history.
NC State closes the non-conference portion of its schedule Sunday when it plays Ole Miss at First Horizon Coliseum in Greensboro. Tipoff against the Rebels is scheduled for 1 p.m. and the game will be televised on ESPN.
