RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team stunned No. 15/13 Virginia Tech, 5-4, in the opening game of the series Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.
The win marks the third win over a ranked team this season for the Wolfpack.
How it Happened
The Pack will return to Dail Softball Stadium on Saturday, April 6 at 4pm to take on the Hokies for game two of the series. The game can be streamed on ACCNX.
The win marks the third win over a ranked team this season for the Wolfpack.
How it Happened
- The Hokies scored first in the opening frame after a single up the middle allowed one to score.
- NC State responded in the bottom of the first after sophomore Amanda Hasler drilled a two run homer to right center to take a 2-1 lead. The homer was the 10th of the season for Hasler and 19th of her career.
- Virginia Tech took a 3-2 lead in the top of the second after another single up the middle brought two more home.
- After a scoreless frame in the second, NC State tied the game three-all in the third. Sophomore MaKayla Marbury drilled a solo bomb to left field -- the hit was her second of the night and ninth homer of the year.
- The defensive efforts by the Pack were impressive in the fifth inning. With one out on the board, Cori McMillan hit a ball to Kaylee Lambrecht at second base. Lambrecht threw to Marbury, who was covering second, to get Bre Peck out and then Marbury attempted to throw to Alaina Smith at first, but the ball bounced off the tip of Smith's glove. Hasler was on the first base line and grabbed the ball and threw it back to Marbury who began a rundown with McMillan between first and second base. Smith eventually got the out and the Pack finished the inning with a 4-6-2-6-3 double play.
- The two teams went scoreless in the fourth and fifth innings. NC State regained the lead in the bottom of the sixth after a two RBI double by junior Hannah Goodwin. The hit secured the win for the Wolfpack.
- Freshman outfielder Tori Ensley recorded a massive diving catch in the top of the seventh on the left field line that marked the second out of the frame. The Hokies then recorded a solo home run, minimizing the deficit to one, but it wasn't enough to stop the Wolfpack defense who then picked up the final out of the meeting.
- Sophomore pitcher Rylee Wymann pitched all seven innings for the Pack and picked up two strikeouts. She was credited with the win, which marked her fifth this season.
- Marbury, Goodwin, and Hasler led the Pack offensively throughout the evening – Marbury tallied two hits, while Goodwin and Hasler each recorded two RBI's.
- Smith helped lead the Pack defensively as she recorded 10 putouts in her first start at first base. The junior is just the second member of the Pack to record 10 putouts in a single game this season.
- The win moves the Pack to 20-16 on the season, 2-11 in Atlantic Coast Conference play.
