CARY, NC—After a rain delay, a 33-minute drive, and playing in two different locations, the Wolfpack Women's Tennis team advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament after defeating Clemson 4-0 in the quarterfinals Friday evening at the Cary Tennis Park and the Smithfield Tennis Center at Duke University.
Doubles action started with a dominating performance from No. 10 Amelia Rajecki and Maddy Zampardo. The freshman-senior pairing was in control from start to finish, winning six straight games to claim the set 6-0. The doubles point would be decided on court two after Abigail Rencheli and Gina Dittmann fell 6-2 on court three.
Nineteenth-ranked Sophie Abrams and Anna Zyryanova found themselves in a back-and-forth affair that came down to a 6-6 tiebreak. After falling down 3-1 in the tiebreak, NC State rattled off five straight points to lead 6-3 and would go on to clinch the doubles points for the Wolfpack after a 7-6 (7-4) victory.
The Wolfpack was aiming for their third win of the season over the Tigers. In singles play, the Wolfpack was well in control of the match from start to finish, taking five of the six first sets.
With much of the first sets completed, the weather became a factor, and rain came in, forcing a delay. After a short conference of officials and coaches, it was determined that singles play would be moved to the Duke campus and played indoors.
It took 16 minutes to wrap up the win for the Wolfpack, as freshman Zampardo earned her first ACC tournament win with a 6-2, 6-2 decision on court four.
The seniors followed, securing the win, with Abrams and Rajecki winning comfortably 6-2, 6-1 each.
The Wolfpack advanced to the semifinals for the second straight year, the fourth time overall. It will be a rematch of last year's finals and a third meeting this season between two in-state foes as NC State will take on the No. 1 seed UNC at 2 p.m. from the Cary Tennis Park.
