#16 Men’s Tennis to Conclude Home Stretch

RALEIGH - The 16th-ranked NC State men's tennis team (4-3, 2-0 ACC) will end its five-match home stretch during the upcoming week as No. 4 Virginia (Feb. 26 at 3 p.m.), Virginia Tech (Feb. 28 at 12 p.m.) and No. 2 Baylor (March 2 at 4 p.m.) visit the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
Due to current State guidelines regarding venue capacity limits, fans will not be permitted at home matches. NC State Athletics will continue to review capacity guidelines throughout the season and will communicate updates as they are available.
PACK IN THE RANKINGS
In Feb. 23's Oracle/ITA rankings, the Wolfpack checked in at No. 16. The team has been ranked in every edition of the 2021 rankings.
Singles and doubles rankings have only been released once in the 2021 season. Fifth-year Alexis Galarneau is ranked No. 7 in singles action while senior Tadas Babelis is ranked at 95th. In doubles, Yannai Barkai and Babelis check in at No. 9 while Galarneau and Robert Turzak sit at No. 23.
LAST TIME OUT
The Wolfpack took down a pair of Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) opponents, defeating Louisville 4-0 on Feb. 19 and Notre Dame 5-2 on Feb. 21.
The doubles pair of Barkai and Collin Shick led the way for NC State in doubles action as the only duo to win both of its matches on the weekend. Seventh-ranked Galarneau paced the Wolfpack in singles action with a pair of ranked wins, including a 6-0, 6-1 win over No. 6 Richard Ciamarra of Notre Dame.
SCOUTING THE CAVALIERS
Virginia checked into the latest Oracle/ITA rankings at No. 4 and is the second-highest ranked team in the ACC with an overall record of 7-2. The Cavaliers competed at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships, defeating then-No. 3 TCU, 4-3, before falling to then-No. 2 North Carolina, 4-2.
Carl Soderlund checks into the singles rankings at No. 29 while Jeffery Von Der Schulenburg sits at tied for 105th. The Cavaliers additionally have a ranked doubles pair in Soderlund and Matthew Lord, who are ranked 35th.
SCOUTING THE HOKIES
Virginia Tech opened ACC play with a win, sweeping Boston College in a 7-0 decision. The Hokies maintain a 5-2 overall record, its two losses coming against then-No. 2 North Carolina and then-No. 19 Kentucky.
Hokies graduate student Mitch Harper is ranked in singles competition, checking in at No. 38.
SCOUTING THE BEARS
Baylor made it to the finals of the ITA National Team Indoor Championships after taking down then-No. 5 Texas and championship host Illinois. The Bears fell to then-No. 2 North Carolina in the finals, 4-1. The Bears have tallied three top-10 wins so far in 2021, having defeated then-No. 4 Michigan once and Texas on two occasions.
Six of Baylor's student-athletes are ranked in singles, the most of any school in the nation. Sven Lah is the highest ranked at No. 43, followed by Adrian Boitan at No. 46. Matias Soto sits at No. 56 while Constantin Frantzen checks in at No. 66. Nick Stachowiak is ranked No. 74, and Charlie Broom rounds out the group at No. 103.
In doubles, the duo of Law and Frantzen are ranked tenth while Soto and Stachowiak check in at No. 33.
