RALEIGH – The No. 3 NC State women's tennis team fell in a gutsy match to No. 13 Virginia, 4-3, on Sunday afternoon at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
The Pack falls to 16-3 on the season, and the Cavaliers move to 9-4.
In doubles, second-ranked Anna Rogers and Alana Smith were quick to pick up a 6-2 ranked victory over No. 41 Chloe Gullickson and Amber O'Dell. The win marked their ninth top-50 win of the season.
Virginia took the last two courts in doubles with 6-3 decisions on both, gaining the 1-0 advantage heading into singles play.
Needing to claim four courts for its 17th win of the season, NC State got off to a slow start in singles and was down early in the first set, but won three of its first sets.
Senior Rogers evened things up on court two with a 6-4, 6-2 win over No. 35 Johanson, which registers as her sixth ranked singles win of the 2019-20 season.
Shortly after, Lexi Keberle dropped court four to 96th-ranked Sofia Munera in straight sets, as did Lana Mavor on court six to Gullickson, giving the Cavaliers a 3-1 lead.
No. 37 Adriana Reami and Jaeda Daniel provided a two-point boost to bring the match to three-all with straight-set wins on courts three and five. Reami's victory against No. 89 O'Dell marks her ninth ranked win of the season, which ties for the team lead in the category (Smith).
No. 16 Smith trailed 5-2 in the second set after dropping her first set with No. 15 Subhash, but stormed back to force a third set. Smith continued her momentum early into the third set, charging ahead to a 2-0, but Subhash rattled off six consecutive sets to upset the Pack.
