RALEIGH, N.C. - In its second conference battle of the season, the NC State men's tennis team fell 6-1 to No. 17 Duke Friday afternoon on the outdoor courts at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
NC State falls to 10-3 overall and 0-2 in conference play, while the Blue Devils improved to 11-7 and 2-1 in the ACC.
"Great ACC battle, as we knew it would be," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "Whenever you have two top-20 teams going at it, it's going to be exciting. I thought the guys did a pretty good job of creating a good atmosphere. Duke did a good job of hanging in there and battling all the way. We had some guys really fight for their matches today, and it didn't go our way, but I'm excited for where this program and this team is heading."
No. 38 Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden started the afternoon strong for the Wolfpack with a win over Nick Stachowiak and Spencer Furman on court one, but Duke went on to win on courts two and three to claim the doubles point.
Jason Lapidus and Sean Sculley defeated Georgiy Malyshev and Tadas Babelis 6-4 on court three, and Catalin Mateas and Nicolas Alvarez won in a tiebreaker 7-6 (2) over 45th-ranked Ivan Saveljic and Igor Saveljic.
Duke extended its lead to start singles play, as Ryan Dickerson defeated Wolfpack freshman Robert Turzak 6-1, 6-3 on court six.
No. 22 Galarneau prevailed in a top-25 matchup on court one. He took down 25th-ranked Alvarez 6-3, 6-4 to put NC State on the board.

On court four, Duke's Stachowiak held serve on deciding point to take the 7-5, 7-5 win over Ivan. His match secured the win for the Blue Devils.
The final matches extended into third sets, both of which Duke won as Mateas defeated Igor 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 and Furman bested Babelis 6-2, 4-6, 6-4.
