MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Senior Tayla Stenta and junior Amanda Rebol both posted two wins out of two singles matches on Friday at the Baseline Tennis Center, as the NC State women's tennis team continued play at the Gopher Invitational.
Doubles
Just as on day one, the duo of Stenta and Taylor Bridges split. They opened by taking on Vasante Shinde and Paula Del Cueto Castillo of Nebraska, earning a 6-4 victory. They followed up against the duo of Tina Kreinis and Mehvish Safdar of Minnesota, falling 6-2.
Singles
The Wolfpack got off to a positive start in its opening singles matches, earning two out of three wins. Seeing action for the first time this season, Amanda Rebol defeated Iowa State's Ekaterina Repina 6-1, 4-0 (retired). Stenta was also successful in her first singles match as she overcame Preethi Kasilingham of North Dakota 6-3, 6-0. Bridges fought hard but fell to Jana Lazarevic of South Dakota 2-6, 6-3, 6-3.
In their next round of singles matches, Stenta and Rebol both saw more success. Stenta pulled off a 6-3, 6-0 win over Carmila Vargas of Minnesota, while Rebol defeated Nebraska's Brianna Lashway 6-3, 6-4. Bridges pushed Carmen Palumbo of North Dakota to her limit, despite losing 4-6, 6-4, 10-6.
Rebol had an enjoyable experience stepping onto the court for the first time in 2017-18 and getting a pair of wins under her belt.
"It feels good to be competing again," she explained. "I'm happy with how I played today and am looking forward to competing again tomorrow."
Assistant Coach David Secker was also pleased with what he's seen from the Wolfpack so far and is eager to see how the rest of the tournament pans out.
"First tournament for these players, so we are really just focused on our side of the net and things we can control" he said. "Done a reasonable job of that overall so far but as always for us we are hoping to get stronger as the tournament goes on. Looking forward to a very strong day tomorrow and to really show some intent with our play and attitudes."
Up Next
Play will start at 8:00 a.m. Saturday with two doubles matches and then one singles match later in the day. In singles, Rebol faces Kemper Gisela of Northern Iowa in a semifinal, while Stenta takes on Claire Reifeis of Nebraska in hers. Bridges is in action against Drake's Elizaveta Petushkova in a consolation match.
