GASTONIA, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team completed a very strong first day at the 2017 Gary Koch Invitational on Monday. Through two of the tournament's three rounds at Gaston Country Club, the Wolfpack sits second among the 14-team field.
NC State shot a 276 (-12) in the first round and followed this up with an even-par 288 to end the day at 564 strokes (-12) and just five shots behind No. 20 Auburn. Seven of the Wolfpack's 10 total rounds on the day were below par.
Jacob McBride is two strokes off the lead after shooting scores of 68 (-4) and 69 (-3) to end the day tied for second with a 137 (-7). Sophomore Stephen Franken (T5) is not far behind after recording impressive marks of 69 (-3) and 71 (-1) to end the day at 140 (-4). Benjamin Shipp (T17, E), Nolan Mills Jr. (T22, +1), and Harrison Rhoades (T22, +1) did a great job of keeping a tight pack with their teammates, as the entire squad resides within the top third of the 81-golfer leaderboard with one round to play.
NC State recorded the best average score on the challenging par threes (3.15) at the Gaston Country Club and the best average score on the par fives (4.38).
