GASTONIA, N.C. – Led by a runner-up finish from senior Jacob McBride and a seventh-place result from sophomore Stephen Franken, the NC State men's golf team finished second at the 2017 Gary Koch Invitational.
The Wolfpack shot a 290 (+2) on Tuesday to end the competition with a cumulative score of 854 (-10) and just eight strokes behind No. 20 Auburn. For the second straight competition, the Wolfpack finished ahead of at least one team in the national top 25, defeating ACC foe No. 13 Virginia by 15 strokes. NC State has now shot below 860 in three consecutive tournaments: 859 (-5, 4th) at the Schenkel Invitational and 854 (-10, T3rd) at the Hootie at Bulls Bay.
McBride's runner-up result is the third in his career and came at a tournament during which he played collegiate rounds 100, 101, and 102 in his 36th appearance. He shot below par all three rounds of the competition, carding a 71 (-1) on Tuesday to finish with a 208 (-8), just one stroke behind individual tournament champion Trace Crowe of Auburn. McBride's eagle on the 18th hole nearly forced a playoff, but Crowe maintained his one-stroke lead with a par.
Franken was not far behind, shooting a 73 (+1) on Tuesday to finish with a 213 (-3). The seventh-place result marks the seventh time in his career (20 tournaments) that he has finished within the top 10 of a tournament field.
Benjamin Shipp (T23, +1), Harrison Rhoades (T29, +2), and Nolan Mills Jr. (T39, +6) kept close enough to their teammates to finish within the top half of the 81-golfer field.
