Sophomore Stephen Franken finishes fourth in field of 81 golfers

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – Led by a fourth-place finish from sophomore Stephen Franken, the NC State men's golf team finished in a tie for third at the 2017 Hootie at Bulls Bay. The Wolfpack shot under par during all three of the tournament's rounds, finishing with a 286 (-2) on Tuesday at Bulls Bay Golf Club.
NC State (854, -10) finished in a tie with No. 23 Auburn and ended the tournament ahead of No. 9 Virginia (864, E) and No. 24 Missouri (862, -2). South Carolina claimed the team title with a combined score of 844 (-2) and No. 25 Mississippi (848, -16) finished second.
The fourth-place finish was the sixth in Franken's young career. In 19 total tournaments with the Wolfpack, he has now finished within the top 20 of a tournament field on 12 occasions. Franken entered the final round in a tie for seventh place and shot an impressive 67 (-5) Tuesday to move up the leaderboard.
Freshman Benjamin Shipp tied for 17th in the field with a cumulative score of 215 (-1). In just seven tournaments at NC State, the Duluth, Ga., native has finished within the top 20 of a tournament field four times.
Statistically, the Wolfpack led all teams in total birdies (61) at the competition and lowest average score on par fives (4.60, -30).
