Pack opens with team total of 303
RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The NC State women's golf team opened competition at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with a total of 303 (+15) to sit in 10th place out of 15 teams.
Naomi Ko turned in the lowest score among the team, as she shot a 74 (+2) to sit in a tie for 25th. India Clyburn sits one stroke back from Ko as she posted an opening round of 75 and is tied for 29th.
"I was striking the ball really well today, and I had a lot of great up and downs to save par," said Ko. "I had a lot of birdie opportunities out there, but they just didn't drop in the hole. I also had to adjust my game plan throughout the day because the wind started to pick up towards the back nine. Overall the weather held up nicely for us today and hopefully it stays the same throughout the week."
Cecily Overbey posted a four-over par 76 to sit in 35th, Sarah Bae finished wth a 78 while Leonie Bettel rounded out the top five with an 80 (+8).
Senior Stephanie Pribonic, who is in the tournament as an individual, shot a 77 to sit in a tie for 46th.
"We were good in stretches but had some course management let downs," said head coach Page Marsh. "Our best golf is ahead of us these next two days as we put to use some 'aha' moments. It's great to be playing again and we're looking forward to tomorrow."
NC State will continue play Monday in Puerto Rico, as the Pack will be paired with players from Iowa State and Purdue on holes 11-14 in an 8 a.m. shotgun start.
