Women's Tennis Sweeps Winthrop in Friday Matchup

RALEIGH, N.C.- With three straight-set wins, the NC State women’s tennis team swept Winthrop Friday afternoon inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center. The squad improves to 3-0 while the Eagles move to 1-4 on the season.

The Wolfpack clinched the doubles point over the Eagles after the duo of Elisha Hande and Joanna Nalborska defeated Winthrop’s Alice Garcia and Tijana Uzelac, 6-2. Winthrop had to forfeit the third doubles match due to multiple player injuries.
The pair of Sophie Nelson and Nicole Martinez also won their doubles match, as they earned a 6-4 victory over Ekin Gunaysu and Mariana Humberg.
In singles play, Nalborska and Hande each earned straight-set victories from their respective courts. Nalborska clinched the Pack’s third point with her 6-4, 6-1 win over Garcia while Hande sealed the team’s victory with a 7-5(7-1), 6-2 win over Uzelac.
Winthrop was also forced to forfeit the singles match on court No. 6.
After each dropped their second set to their Winthrop opponent, Liza Fieldsend and Martinez rallied back in their third sets to earn two more points for the Pack. Fieldsend defeated Ekin Gunaysu 5-7, 6-3, 6-2, while Martinez earned a 6-4, 4-6, 6-1 victory over Mariana Humberg.
Nelson capped off the match with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Monica Aguado to give the Pack its second sweep of the season.
Up Next
NC State will return to action on Sunday for its second weekend match against Georgia State. Competition is slated for a 10 a.m. start at the Dail Outdoor Center, with weather permitting.
