CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Two players from the NC State women's tennis team advanced to the singles quarterfinal round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Carolina's Regional on Saturday before concluding tournament play.
Joanna Nalborska, the No. 9 seed in the tournament, defeated Alice Garcia of Winthrop 6-4, 6-0 in the round of 16 before falling 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinal to Clemson's Joana Eidukonyte. Eidukonyte is ranked 11th in the country and was the No. 2 seed in the regional.
Freshman Amanda Rebol saw her impressive tournament run come to an end in the quarterfinal round, falling 6-0, 6-1 to Anna Ulyashchenko of Wake Forest.
Rebol earned her quarterfinal spot in the bracket when she netted a 6-4, 6-1 victory over Mariana Humberg of Winthrop in a round of 16 match as well as a notable win over No. 84 Kimmy Guerin of Wake Forest in round of 32 play on Friday.
Martina Frantova and Claudia Wiktorin had advanced to quarterfinal competition in doubles draws on Friday with Saturday's play resulting in an 8-2 loss against No. 4 seed Hadley Berg and Brigit Folland of South Carolina.
Bianca Moldovan, Barbara Mancera and Tayla Stenta competed in extra matches at the ITA Regional on Saturday, collecting one victory each in consolation competition.
SIMON SAYS
"I think it's clear that we would rather still be playing in the tournament but no matter what, there's still a lot of work to be done. That being said, overall this was the best collective effort at a fall tournament from Pack women's tennis in several seasons. Having occurred at the most important event of the fall season speaks volumes for these girls. They were able step up and find a way to get the job done more often than not the past few days. We have a young team and there's much more to come, as it is still early days for this group."
"It was great to see senior Joanna Nalborska and freshman Amanda Rebol represent the work ethic that NC State was founded on and advance to the singles quarterfinals. We have one more event this fall but many more practice days on top of that to try and accelerate our learning curve. As a team we have to focus on the basics and working them the best we can day-in and day-out. If we can manage our application level then I'm confident the progress we have seen will be more than continued moving forward with the program. Go Pack!" – Simon Earnshaw, head coach
The Pack returns to action for its final competition of the fall season, Thursday, Nov. 5 at the USTA Clay Court Invitational in Orlando, Fla. at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex at Walt Disney World.
