CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A resilient road effort by the NC State women’s soccer team came up just short at Soldiers Field Stadium on the campus of Harvard University Sunday afternoon. The Wolfpack fell in overtime to Boston College by a final score of 1-0.
Sophomore goalkeeper Mackenzie Stelljes had a tremendous match in net for the Wolfpack, recording a career high 13 saves in the defeat. A 96-minute header by Hayley Dowd at the near post which came as a result of a free kick proved to be the only difference in the contest.
“There were a lot of good performances by our team for parts of the match today,” said head coach Tim Santoro. “We just didn’t put together the full game as a team.”
The two sides battled to a scoreless first half, with Boston College (10-6-0, 3-4-0 ACC) recording four shots on goal compared to the Pack’s one.
Despite BC’s advantage in shots, the Wolfpack (2-11-2, 0-7-0 ACC) laid claim to the best scoring chance of the opening stanza. In the 19th minute, a long ball played straight up the middle by State’s defense caused confusion among the Eagles’ back line. The ball fell to freshman Kayla Saager, who snapped a quick shot from six yards out. The attempt struck the midsection of BC goalkeeper Alex Johnson, keeping the match scoreless.
Neither side was able to break the deadlock in the second half, as the teams headed to overtime tied 0-0. Stelljes was key in the second frame, stopping numerous BC attempts on goal to keep the match scoreless.
One of State’s best second-half opportunities came in the 74th minute shortly after Franziska Jaser was brought down just outside the penalty area. Saager lined up a free kick and pinged her shot attempt off the crossbar.
A foul was whistled on NC State five minutes into the first overtime period. A minute later, Lauren Bernard whipped in a cross from a dangerous angle and Dowd was able to sneak a header inside the far post for the match-winning goal.
The Wolfpack will next be in action at home on Thursday, Oct. 23 vs. Miami. The match will kick off at 7 p.m. and will serve as NC State’s 2014 Senior Night.
