CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The NC State women’s soccer team dropped its road match at the No. 4 Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday afternoon, losing by a final score of 6-0.
“Virginia is very good and justifiably one of the best teams in the country,” said head coach Tim Santoro. “The combination of us being very shorthanded and them being very good was tough.”
Injuries continued to be a factor for the Wolfpack, as Santoro’s side played without its 2013 leading scorer (Jackie Stengel) for the 11th consecutive game and is still playing matches without a significant portion of its starting defense.
Virginia’s (13-1-0, 5-1-0 ACC) Brittany Ratcliffe scored two goals for one of the top offensive units in the country, finding the back of the net in the 27th and 70th minutes. Teammates Kaili Torres (30th minute), Makenzy Doniak (49th), Danielle Colaprico (54th), and Meghan Cox (65th) also found the back of the net for the hosts.
Six Wolfpackers recorded shots in the match, with Caroline Gentry’s two leading the way. Jenna Kalwa, Brittany Stanko, Cailyn Boch, and Kasey Koballa also had attempts at goal throughout the course of the match.
Kalwa recorded State’s first chance of the match early on, snapping a header on target. Virginia’s Morgan Stearns was positioned well and made the save to deny the Wolfpack an early lead.
Virginia would take a 2-0 lead in the first half from goals by Ratcliffe and Torres. On the other side of halftime, the Cavaliers found the back of the net in the 49th, 54th, 65th, and 70th minutes to earn the victory.
NC State (2-10-2, 0-6-0 ACC) will next be in action on Sunday, Oct. 19 at Boston College. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Eagles is set for 1 p.m.
