RALEIGH, N.C. --- Despite winning the doubles point on a stirring comeback from Ashley Miller and Joelle Kissell, 32nd-ranked NC State fell to 15th-ranked Clemson, 5-2, Sunday at the JW Isenhour Tennis Center.
NC State (10-5, 1-4 ACC) split the first two doubles matches, as Lenka Hojckova and Tatiana Illova knocked off Maria Belaya and Caroline Magnusson 8-3, and 19th-ranked Sandhya Nagaraj and Sanaa Bhambri were topped by nationally top-ranked Josipa Bek and Keri Wong 8-6.
At the conclusion of the first two matches, Miller and Kissell trailed Clemson’s Vyskocilova/Henry duo 7-4. The Pack tandem made a late charge, winning four games in a row, and eventually besting the Tigers in a tiebreaker to take a 9-8 (8-6) victory.
In singles competition, Clemson regained control, winning the first four matches to clinch the victory.
73rd-ranked Nagaraj took a set from 12th-ranked Bek, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-1, 6-0. Illova pushed 123rd-ranked Vyskocilova to a first-set tiebreak before dropping a 7-6 (9-7), 6-2 decision.
Kissell scored the Pack’s lone singles win, dispatching Magnusson 7-5, 6-1. The freshman’s win streak grows to eight-straight matches after a perfect 4-0 week. Kissell has not lost a singles match since March 1.
Next week, NC State begins a stretch of four-straight road matches starting with a trip to Tallahassee on April 1 to take on 35th-ranked Florida State at 4 p.m.
